COVID cancels Schoolies events
Schoolies Week events will not proceed this year.
Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young has designated mass gatherings of young people over consecutive days ‘high risk’.
That means organised events including beachfront concerts will not be staged.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the decision is unfortunate but inescapable.
“The pandemic means we cannot have mass gatherings,” the Premier said.
“Parents need to know their children’s safety comes first.
“We do not want them contracting or spreading COVID-19.”
The Premier said school-leavers should still celebrate their achievements and take advantage of being able to travel throughout the state.
“Schoolies Week doesn’t have to be just one week,” the Premier said.
“We are Good to Go across Queensland to some of the most beautiful places in the world right here in our own backyard.”
Accommodation providers will be required to register guests as part of their COVID-safe plans.
Gatherings in residences including holiday units will be limited to no more than 10 people state-wide from November 21 to December 11.
Rules for restaurants, pubs and clubs are unchanged.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Health Steven Miles said those heading for end-of-year celebrations will need to make sure they are following the rules.
“No one is saying you can’t celebrate the end of the school year,” the Deputy Premier said.
“Go away with your mates by all means but, sadly, we all have to keep COVID in mind.”
Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said Schoolies celebrations would be raised at the national meeting of health officers.
“This is not something that is unique to Queensland,” Dr Young said.
“I feel terribly for this year’s school leavers who have already been through so much.
“But that is the reality of keeping every family safe from this horrible disease.”

If you are concerned, and you have already booked accommodation etc, and no longer wish to attend, then contact your accommodation providers to discuss refunds, or postponement of your holiday.
We are living in uncertain times, and right now Schoolies is not a priority, but what is a priority is to have you consider whether it is the time to be engaging in such a celebration.
Young people are the group with the highest infection rates of Covid-19, and while for many it will not necessarily mean that they will become extremely unwell, for some, of course, it could also mean serious illness or death. Be wise with your choices now, as they could seriously impact on others.
Byron Bay is a tiny town. It does not have the capacity to deal with a serious outbreak of Covid-19. Our local Byron Central hospital is not a hospital that has the capacity to have even just one person on a respirator, and anyone seriously unwell is immediately transferred to other hospitals in other towns. Schoolies has always caused extreme impact on our local ambulance and hospital services, please consider this in your own thoughts on schoolies for this year. ... See MoreSee Less

PS If you upload the clip Facebook (rather than being a link to youtube) will favour the sharing of it... something I've just learned 🙂
FANTASTIC clip Nicqui!
THE RED FROGS NEED HELP!! This amazing group of around 150 volunteers come from all across Australia to help us with the Byron Schoolies Safety Response each year, but this year they are in dire need of some more accommodation, particularly from Sat 18th - 25th November, when they still need 30 beds and again from 26th November through to Sat 2nd Dec (less beds are needed for this week). They do have a small budget, but definitely not an endless one, but they do make great tenants and are very respectful. The accom MUST be in Byron Bay, as they don't have transport. If you can help please contact Chris at - chris@redfrogs.com - The Red Frogs are all nominated by their local chaplains before they can even apply to become a Red Frog, they pay their own way to come here, usually taking their own holidays to serve the schoolies and assist where they can, they also pay towards their food and accommodation. They are the MOST giving group of people Byron is lucky enough to have come here and assist our community with the heavy-traffic time of Schoolies. Please, if you can help, or know of someone who may be able to, please share this information with them. - au.redfrogs.com/schoolies ... See MoreSee Less
