WordPress has evolved. Once the bloggers platform of choice, WordPress has become the website platform of choice. WordPress powers over half of the top million websites (March 2014).
With over 30,000 free plugins, you can do almost anything. I recommend about 50 plugins and I usually install about a dozen WordPress plugins by default. Read more about WordPress website security, protection, prevention.
There are thousands of Themes available for free and premium. I recommend these Themes & theme markets.
I’ve expanded my recommendations to the Premium WordPress market which has exploded over the last few years to provide some quality standalone products and worthwhile upgrades.

This plugin is by the author of Contact Form 7 and Really Simple CAPTCHA, which I recommend. Besides collecting users in to a more friendly exportable address book, this plugin can replace Contact Form 7 to Database Extension, to save CF7 submits to database.read more
Warning: this plugin has been removed from the WordPress repository. (see note) Update to version 3.0.3 for safe version. I have now replaced this plugin with WP ReCaptcha Integration, which is an anti bot tick box, an easier alternative for users than to decode a captcha image.read more
This plugin “Spam Free WordPress” adds a required password click before permitting a user to make comment. Use this as a more user friendly alternative to answering a quiz or decoding a captcha image. For login security I recommended combining “SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam” to add a captcha image for added security on the login page together with “Wordfence Security” to limit login attempts or an alternative dedicated plugin called “limit login attempts“. For custom form security I recommend “Contact Form 7” with a Quiz field and a Captcha image using “Really Simple CAPTCHA“.read more

Wordfence Security is my preferred solution. It has an easy and automated scanner that check for malicious code and can compare the WordPress, Theme and Plugins files with the original WordPress library, allow you to view the differences and revert to original version of file or delete it. Wordfence has a firewall preventing malicious scripts from operating, a built in traffic log which allows you to block bad IP addresses, a method to automatically limit fake crawlers and limit and block login attempts by hackers.read more

This is an easier option than installing a full cart system. If you don’t need catalog, stock control and sales reporting. If you only need PayPal payment gateway with these options: – Currency and language settings – add to cart buttons (transfers to PayPal website) – product name – product sku – product extra info (customer input field) – product weight – product price – shipping cost – additional item shipping cost – check out / view cart button (transfers to PayPal website). Note: this plugin has not been updated in a while (see above). I also recommend WordPress Simple PayPal Shopping Cart plugin which includes an on site cart.read more
